One of the most spectacular canyons in the east, the depth of the New River Gorge ranges from 700 to 1,300 feet. Herein, the river drops 240 feet over a 14-mile stretch of Class I-to-V rapids. More than 150,000 people take whitewater rafting trips on the New River April through October.

But many suggest the best time for rafting the New River is spring. The prices for guided trips are low and water levels are high. With water flows often up to 10-times it's normal volume, spring New River rafting trips can provide rafters with a wild, heart-pounding adventure!

The season for springtime rafting trips typically runs from early-April through mid-May, when water runoff from spring rains is highest and the ground is normally saturated from recent snowfalls. During the summer months the New Rivers flow typically drops, with the flow gradually decreasing through the fall.

Whitewater rafting companies generally divide the river into two sections -- the Upper New River and the Lower New River

Upper New River
The Upper New River typically offers a relatively tame rafting experience, and is suitable for families with children or beginners who want a taste of a whitewater adventure.

Lower New River
When conditions are right, and water levels high, the Lower New River can offer an extreme rafting experience, offering a challenge for even experienced rafters.
